Wireless speakers make it easy to deliver the perfect summer soundtrack almost anywhere. A lot of them are good in a pinch, but very few are worth buying in bulk, let alone sprinkling throughout the entire house. However, Denon has created something worthy of the whole-house treatment with HEOS.
HEOS is Denon’s wireless music system. Unlike most wireless speaker options, Denon doesn’t ask you to pick between Bluetooth and Wi-Fi; this one does both. That way, you can have beautiful music almost anywhere from a variety of sources.
Besides being able to play back music that’s stored on your phone, tablet, or USB drive, HEOS works with streaming services such as Spotify, Pandora, SiriusXM, Deezer, Napster, TIDAL, Amazon Music, and more. (Just be advised that some of those services require subscriptions and/or fees.) It even supports high-resolution audio, including uncompressed WAV (PCM), ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec), and FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) music files up to 24-bit/192-kHz. DSD and AIFF (Audio Interchange File Format) support is expected to follow soon.
Another way HEOS differs from many wireless speakers is that it works well alone, in pairs, or in many pairs—with up to 32 different HEOS devices on one network, to be exact. The HEOS lineup currently includes four speakers (HEOS 1, HEOS 3, HEOS 5, and HEOS 7), a subwoofer (HEOS Subwoofer), two soundbars (HEOS HomeCinema and Bar), a receiver (HEOS AVR), two amplifiers (HEOS Drive and HEOS Amp), and a preamp (HEOS Link). Whether you have one speaker or a house full of them, control is easy via the HEOS app. Available for iOS, Android, and Kindle devices, the app allows users to stream audio to any and all HEOS products, so you can put the same music all over the house or just in specific rooms.
