From the Corner Office
Think Spring!
The unseasonably warm weather we enjoyed this past weekend in the New York/New Jersey area drove me outdoors with a bad case of spring fever. I'll bet it did the same for you, and perhaps got you thinking about how to enhance your own outdoor environment for the upcoming season. In this issue of Solutions, we'll explore some options to bring your favorite music, sports, and movies outdoors for the entertainment of family and friends. Summer is just around the corner, so call me at the number below if EDG can be of help in making yours the best ever.

Outdoor Living, The EDG Way
One of the best ways to set a festive or relaxing mood outdoors is to extend your multiroom audio system to your deck, pool area, or garden. Enjoying your music server's playlists or your favorite satellite radio station in your yard makes it feel more like an extension of your home. Today's multiroom systems typically come with a network music player as well, which allows the streaming of your computer's music library and internet radio stations to your yard or any zone in the house. (An upgrade to consider if you have an existing system that lacks this feature!)
Without walls and ceilings to contain the sound outdoors, you end up with lower volume and more ambient noise to overcome than you would with the same equipment inside. Outdoor speakers need substantial amplifier power to play loud without distortion or audible strain. The most popular speaker options include weather-proof bookshelf-style speakers, and camouflauged speakers. Bookshelf speakers, such as those offered by B&W, are often mounted under an eave or other overhang; they can also be staked in the ground under the cover of shrubs.
The most common camouflauged speakers are the boulder-like "rock" speakers offered by several manufacturers. These are a great choice for many environments, though there are other options for blending speakers outside. James Loudspeaker offers some unusual high-performance solutions, including staked speakers that look like landscape lighting, planter speakers for decks and patios, and a 25-inch tall rock subwoofer. If you're really determined to rock out in the great outdoors, the company's subterranean subwoofers are literally buried, and deliver copious bass through an innocuous covered port at ground level. Whatever your performance or aesthetic needs, EDG has a range of options to design a system that meets them.
The Wide View
For sports fans, there's nothing better than gathering on your deck or patio with good friends and watching a ball game with a cold drink at hand. Pantel offers weatherproof flat-panel TVs designed to stay outside year round in sizes ranging from 20 to 65 inches. These can be mounted on the side of the house, on a pole, or even on a motorized lift hidden in a piece of outdoor furniture. The company's self-contained outdoor motorized model, shown here, gets rolled out as needed and stored with the rest of the lawn furniture at season's end.
On the other hand, if you're after a true communal experience and blow-you-away visuals, you can set up a temporary outdoor theater for special events. Blow-up screens supplied by several manufacturers get staked out in your yard and inflate automatically with the included blower. Airscreen makes models ranging from 16 x 9 feet up 40 x 22 feet! Mated with a high definition projector, these screens offer the ultimate outdoor movie experience for your child's birthday party, or for a grown-up movie night with a couple hundered of your favorite friends and neighbors!
