iCanDoWhat?
It would be hard to find a product that's had more impact on portable entertainment than the Apple iPod. But what about its impact on in-home entertainment? Increasingly, our customers are asking us for solutions that integrate their iPods with their distributed audio and video systems.
Read Paul Krasnodenski's article for a detailed look at Control4's cool new docking station, as well as some fantastic new software that turns any iTouch or iPhone into a wireless Control4 touchpad. And while you're at it, check out our new blog and let us know what you think.

As noted in our E-News blast last week, the 2009 CES show in Las Vegas early this month could be characterized as more evolutionary than revolutionary. There was little that left us gasping, but still plenty of cool stuff to lust after: the media darling of the show was an LG wristwatch cellphone that brings to life the technology that Dick Tracy creator Chester Gould immortalized in his comic strip in 1946. On the audio/video and home theater side, we saw some some pretty slick stuff that, if not mind-bending, pushes forward the state of the HDTV art or offers some helpful solutions for installers and their customers. Here's a small sampling.
B&W Panorama Speaker System
All-in-one soundbars that combine drivers for all 5 main channels of a surround sound system into a single, slender cabinet are nothing new. But B&W's late entry into the field at this year's CES with the $2,200 Panorama certainly validates the category as high end.

Panasonic Z1 Plasma HDTV
With a name that sounds more like a sports car than a television, Panasonic's new flagship Z1-series plasma takes the word "sleek" to a new level. The first model, due out this summer, is the TC-P54Z1. Its 54-inch screen size represents a first for the category, but what really sets it apart is its form factor.

Sony's Eco LCD HDTVs
Those who demand the best will be excited by Sony's new XBR9 series LCDs due out this spring. They feature full HD 1080p resolution, the company's new Bravia 3 video processing engine, Motionflow 240 Hz refresh technology for smooth motion on sports and action movies, and enhanced networking capabilities that allows the HDTV to display streamed content from Yahoo, Amazon, and YouTube.

Rush to Your Senses
An architect we had worked with often in the past contacted us to discuss a 25,000 sq-ft new construction project. At the initial client meeting, we discussed the client's wish list for "his wing" of the estate. It included an office that connected to a library/reading room and his entertainment space which included a media room with bar and billiards area. The spaces were to be open to each other, on the same level, so there were no concerns about isolating the rooms sonically from one another or about playing the system at loud volumes.

Dark Night: Obama Goes to Bat on the DTV Transition
On January 8, then President-elect Barack Obama asked Congress and the Federal Communications Commission to hold off awhile before pulling the plug on analog television broadcasting, a move that has been long planned for February 17th. Without the stay, that day would mark "lights out" for most over-the-air transmissions in the analog NTSC broadcast format adopted in the 1950s.

At EDG, We're Always On The Blog
Electronics Design Group has launched its new blog at www.edgonlineblog.com. EDG staffers and guest bloggers from the custom integration community will be commenting regularly on industry news, new technology developments, our business philosophies, and whatever else strikes our fancy. In our first entry, The Why of What We Do, company president and founder Bob Gullo reminds us that, when it comes to custom installation, it's not about the gear, but what you do with it. Check us out, and feel free to add your comments to this or any future post.
