edg-bob-face-.jpgSolutions readers, it is with great pleasure to introduce you to this months guest writer, Rebecca Day. Rebecca is a well published and respected writer having articles appear in numerous trade and consumer related magazines. Check out Rebecca's monthly column "Play" in Electronic House Magazine.

Play: Gizmo Thanks

by Rebecca Day — from November 2005 , p. 64 "Electronic House Magazine"

When my editor first approached me about writing this column, I wondered how I'd come up with a new topic to rant about every month. Turns out that venting about all the experiences that drive me nuts has been great therapy. But there's a lot to like about technology too. Because this is the month to give thanks, I'm devoting this column to the technologies that I never want to live without. TiVo: I used to hurry home to watch a TV program and wonder how I could let the boob tube run my life. Now TiVo automatically records my favorite programs, lists alternate showings of series like The Sopranos so I can record at convenient times, and finds movies with favorite actors or directors so I don't have to pour over.

FAQ

Q. I have a multi room audio system in my home but sometimes I want to be able to listen to the tunes on my iPod. Is there a way I can connect an iPod to the MRA system?

A. Absolutely!  Crestron has a compact interface for Apple iPods that allows you to dock your player and instantly share your entire music collection with speakers located throughout your house.  You can navigate your play lists on control/touch panels that mimic the iPod experience.

Q. I’m “on the fence” about buying an HD DVD or Blu-ray Disc Player.  I’m hesitant to purchase anything because I don’t know which one will be the better option for the future. Any suggestions?

A. There’s no definite answer to that question but instead of waiting to be on the cutting edge of technology, why not have both?   LG has recently released the first BD & HD DVD player, the Super Blu™.  It plays a wide variety of video disc formats including Blu-ray Disc™, HD DVD, DVD, DVD±R, DVD±RW so you can watch high-definition discs while enjoying your current DVDs.  In addition to a user-friendly menu system, the Super Blu™ is capable of full HD 1080p resolution through HDMI.

Q. I’m designing an outdoor entertainment area for my new home.  Are there ways to protect a plasma screen from the natural elements (i.e. rain, snow, wind, heat, etc.)?

A. There are a number of environmental enclosures so flat panels can be permanently mounted in an outdoor area.  The enclosure protects the TV from dirt, humidity, snow, and other weather conditions while maintaining a constant temperature/environment for the flat-panel.  A few factors to consider before purchasing an enclosure are:  temperature extremes, average precipitation for the region, where you’d want to place the enclosure relative to sunlight, the structure of the surface to which you’ll be mounting the enclosure, and security measures.  Because all of these aspects are essential to an effective and fully functional entertainment experience, you should seek the advice of a professional systems installer.
