Q. What’s the proper configuration of a 5.1 and 7.1 sound system in a room?
A.
First let’s define what comprises a 5.1 and 7.1 system. A left, center, and right (LCR) speaker along with 2 rear channels make up the 5 speakers. Include 1 subwoofer and you have a 5.1 system. A 7.1 system adds an additional set of speakers on each side, or more commonly referred to as side channels. You will see some configurations ending in .2 which indicates a second subwoofer in the set-up.
The system should be configured so that your seating area is centered between the rear speakers. The center speaker can be placed above or below the TV display but the front speakers should be on the left and right of the TV (at ear-level when seated) and the 2 rear speakers on the left and right, slightly behind the seating area (above ear level when
