From the Corner Office

edg-bob-face-.jpgI am very excited to turn this month’s Corner Office section over to our guest columnist Katie Sommer . Katie is the editor of CE Lifestyles, the first technology magazine written for women. Katie joined Sandhills Publishing in 2003, after earning her M.A. in English and working at the Center For Henry James Studies at Creighton University, editing and archiving the handwritten correspondence of American author Henry James!

Rethink Pink

by Katie Sommer,

Editor, CE Lifestyles

Henry James, in his “Italian Hours,” succinctly illustrated the relativity of color when he described the Tiber River as “the color of gold, the sentimentalists say, the color of mustard, the realists.” A browny-yellow can be the most gorgeous of inspiration to some people, and to others, it is akin to dirt. Though black and silver are still the norm with electronic devices, more and more colors are invading the CE space, but consumer electronics designers should take note of James’ observations when they decide on the

EDG Project Highlights

Tree Tops

The old house was set back in a field, far away from the single winding road that passed through this rural landscape. It was late on a dark night; only the stars shining through the heavily foliated trees provided any light. Suddenly, there was an unexpected hard knock at the front door, startling the unsuspected family inside.

This sounds like the beginning of a horror story, but it actually happened. That stranger's knock at the door that night turned out to be the beginning of a wonderful adventure with a very happy ending. Electronics Design Group was contacted by the homeowner of this . . . FAQ

Q. How should speakers be positioned for 2-channel stereo?

A. Balance and Image are two key considerations when positioning your speakers. Positioning speakers too close to reflected surfaces, like walls, can cause a boost in the level of the bass. So, adjusting the position of the speakers relative to the walls will provide the best balance. What your looking for in regards to image is the best left-right spread and the best impression of depth. The best starting point for this is to place the speakers and listeners at the corners of an imaginary equilateral triangle. In other words, the angle subtended by the speakers at the central listening position should be around 60 degrees. Room acoustics and working around everything in the room often limit what you can do but are factors most of us deal with unless you're fortunate enough to build a room from scratch.

Q. What's the difference between Dolby Digital and Dolby Pro Logic II?

A. Dolby Digital is a fully digital audio signal that has stereo surround capabilities. This is the standard for DVD and HDTV. Each of Dolby Digital's surround channels can carry the full audio bandwidth. Dolby Pro Logic II is the standard for video tape and NTSC television broadcasts. Pro Logic is an analog technology that has a single mono surround output, even though the mono output is usually played back through two speakers. Both technologies were born out of Dolby Digital Laboratories work in the film industry in the early 90's and offer an exciting sense of spatiality and involvement.
