Q. I'm an architect building a home to the LEED Green Building Rating System standards. One of the areas considered for certification is outdoor lighting control. Can you explain to me how an outdoor lighting control system can help me achieve the proper credit?
A.
Lighting Control systems for landscapes are robust, smart systems that will adjust light fixtures based on the latitude and longitude settings of the home. This Astronomical Time Clock is extremely important with the varying changes to sunset and sunrise throughout the year. Also a Time Clock Setting would be applied, adjusting light fixtures to various states of dimming at given intervals throughout the night and into the morning. A sample schedule would be as follows.
At sunset - Outdoor fixtures in front of the house and front side of garage on to 70% 11 PM - 1/2 of the front fixtures will turn off, the remaining 1/2 will dim to 50% 3 AM - More front light fixtures will turn off, all rear outdoor fixtures will turn off Sunrise - All outdoor fixtures gently fade off
Q. My boardroom is clunky and not very conducive to hosting presentations. Please help!!!

Integrating electronics into your boardroom will not only make your room easier to navigate, but it will surely keep the audience awake. Computer interfaces and microphone nestled into the center of the conference table, strategically positions plasma screens so everyone has a clear sight line, motorized drapery and a lighting control system with preset scenes all integrated into a touchpanel control system are some of the elements we can incorporate to get your presentations jumping.
Q. In redesigning my back yard/pool area I would like to implement some audio. How do I plan for something like this?
A.
Quantity, Quantity, Quantity. Big, open outdoor areas with designated space such as pool, spa, and patio require their own speakers or speaker groups. If you try to put speakers in one location, say along the back of the house, and blast them so they can be heard throughout the entire space, the people nearest those speakers will no longer be able to hear. Once these speakers are lowered, then you have sacrificed the audio for those on the other side of the space. Just like planning indoor audio, where you would have speakers in each room, the same should be done for each designated outdoor space to ensure an even audio level throughout.
