I can recall in 1989 hearing about a "grass roots" effort to start an
organization (with a funny name) for custom installation of home
audio and video. At that time there were very few of us around the
country, but we all had similar backgrounds, from hobbyists, to car
audio technicians, to sales people in retail audio/video stores. We all had similar needs in starting our business, from finding vendors who would sell us products, training staff, and spreading the word that a service like ours exists to potential customers. We needed a voice with manufactures.

FAQ
Q. My Interior designer and A/V installer have different opinions on what color my new home theater should be. The designer is suggesting light colors to match existing furniture and my installer is suggesting dark colors for optimal video performance?
A.
For the best video performance, the front wall, at least, should be as dark as possible. And if there is any custom cabinetry flanking the screen, it should be finished with a matte process. This will promote contrast and reduce glare and reflection that could create an aura around the screen. Dark greens and blues, and the classic burgundy, are all rich warm colors that will enhance the theater ambiance.

Welcome back to Custom Corner. With
each issue we will examine an interesting application of engineered
electronics integration with consideration towards aesthetics and
design, while limiting any sacrifice to equipment performance.
This month we visit our CEDIA Electronic Lifestyles 2004 Best Hidden Installation, a penthouse apartment with tremendous high-performance hidden technology. From the onset, the apartment was engineered with integration of HVAC, audio, video, motorized devices, shades and light control. Working closely with the architect, builder, interior designer, and tradesmen, Electronics Design Group created this technologically enabled residence with multi-room audio, multiple plasma displays, a projector lift with motorized screen, and impressive rack of equipment. Care was given to the cabinetry design for the equipment, as sufficient ventilation was required with the multitude of components. Note the grille at the base of the cabinetry, and the chase developed at the top of the unit to support convection current and keep things cool.
