The Art of Flat TV
There is no question that “Thin is in” and in the consumer
electronics arena flat panel TV’s are the hottest category. With
versatile mounting options the applications for flat TV’s are endless.
The most straightforward solution is to simply mount the TV on the
wall with a bracket. With careful wiring for audio and video
connections and power, this solution can be achieved with some well thought out planning. Consider the following; 1) location of equipment such as cable box, DVD player or satellite box, 2) selecting the correct height, and 3) which bracket best fits the application. Brackets are designed to tilt to angle the TV downward or with a swing out arm that allows the TV to be viewed in multiple locations.
Don’t forget speakers too. If the purpose is just a “TV” then the speakers built into the flat panel will suffice. Otherwise if the application is geared towards a media room then placement of speakers for surround sound may include building in speakers into the wall or ceilings. Depending on the bracket used, this solution will have a depth of 6” - 8” off the wall.
One question that comes up often is, “How do
we build the TV into a wall?” While this solution
achieves a flush look, there is more to this than
just cutting a hole in the wall. The examples
above are technical drawings (Figs. 1-4) for
mounting a 42” panel into a wall. There are
numerous considerations, which may or may
not be possible, depending on the whether the
project is new construction or an existing room.
First is depth! The interior wall cavity must be a
minimum of 6” deep and clear of any
obstructions such as ductwork or pipes. Second

FAQ
Q. Won't a bunch of timers be adequate for managing my lights?
A.
A whole-house lighting system sounds awfully complicated and expensive. Timers will do the trick for simply turning lights on and off at specified times, but that's where the excitement ends. A more intelligent system will dramatically affect the appearance of your home. From dimming capabilities, to pre-set zones, to astronomical setting you'll be investing in a more sophisticated system improving the aesthetics, efficiency and reliability of your home, not to mention increasing your ease-of-use. Imagine having to reset all of those annoying timers every few months as sunrise and sunset fluctuates from season to season.
Fresh Air. Picture Perfect.

Welcome back to Custom Corner. Each month we explore an interesting application of engineered electronics integration with consideration towards architecture, aesthetics and design, without sacrificing equipment performance.
This month we review a great media room that supports fantastic audio and video performance, as well as integration to lighting control and motorized shades and drapes. As the client is a music buff and plays guitar, he wanted a room where he could jam with his friends, or relax to watch movies and sports.
Employing burgundy fabrics and earth-toned materials, this media room is incredibly comfortable for listening to Super Audio CDs, with lots of natural light that accentuates the size of the room.
