Greetings, Solutions readers!
I won't yammer on this month. There's too much great stuff packed into this issue of Solutions for you not to dig in right away. Like what? Well, for starters we recently returned from our yearly industry (CEDIA) trade show. We've recapped some of the newest and coolest products and technologies in the Product and Technology News section. While Bob waits for the next phase of his construction to be completed, he offers his two cents on the past, present, and future of Expo in From The Corner Office.
EDG walked away this year with several awards. The Project Highlights section features our award winning home theater, and the Newsroom recaps EDG's 2003 Dealer of the Year Award from ReQuest Multimedia and a third place finish at the Installer Olympics.
As always your questions are answered in The Service Center. This month addresses phone systems, choosing the right TV, and energy saving with dimming technology. This months Manufacturer's Spotlight, Communications Supply Corporation, presents an in-depth overview on Advanced Wiring. So put your feet up on your desk, sit back, left mouse click, and enjoy.
We've Come A Long Way Baby!
I can recall in 1989 hearing about a "grass roots" effort to start an organization for custom installation of home audio and video. At that time there were very few of us around the country, but we all had similar backgrounds, from hobbyists, to car audio technicians, to sales people in retail audio/video stores. We all had similar needs in starting our business, from finding vendors who would sell us products, training staff, and spreading the word that a service like ours exists to potential customers. We needed a voice with manufactures.
We were a very misunderstood group of people. I can recall being labeled with the term "trunk slammer" and being viewed by manufactures and retail audio video storeowners as "not a real business" because we operated as a non-retail entity. Some, if not most, started our business from our basements or garages. These were frustrating times on many fronts. Fortunately, I wasn't alone and we had our first trade show in Amelia Island Florida; it was in a smallish space, there couldn't have been more than a few hundred people. The "exhibits" were skirted tables, and the companies a bit disorganized. But when I left the show to come home, I knew that this was going to be just the beginning.

Communications Supply Corporation presents
Advanced Wiring Systems for Your Home
It's a beautiful home . . . but is it a smart home, keeping pace with today's needs and today's technology . . . plus, ready and waiting for future technologies? Time was when wiring for phones and lamps was standard. Then, new high-efficiency appliances demanded heavy-duty wall sockets and personal computers begged for separate phone lines so as to stay connected to the Internet. Today's information and communication explosion demands a whole new approach.
With Advanced Wiring Systems, this home could be ready and waiting for future interactive services! And for today's home, just by setting in the required wall outlets, any room in the house can be equipped for whatever function may be wanted today, tomorrow, next year - next millennium!
Motorized curtains were specified to add some color and drama to the cabinet wall, but we found another purpose, side masking. Easily controlled with one button using the AMX Touchpanel the client can achieve a 4:3 version by adjusting the curtain to different limits.
Advanced Wiring Systems (AWS) follow the common high-voltage electrical wiring model whereby services are distributed throughout the home from a central point. In the case of low-voltage structured wiring designs, that central point is a server that functions very much in the same way as circuit breaker boxes are the starting point for house-wide electrical conduit.

Home Theater Masterpiece
This project was for an existing client who had built a home two years earlier and waited on completing the lower level. We had recently completed a dedicated 12-seat theater for one of his good friends, which our client was able to experience first hand. This high performance system served as a good starting point of reference. We had an optimal size space to work with; 26' wide x 34' long with 9' ceilings. The objective was to be able to seat 22 people! We accommodated 16 luxurious Cinematech theater seats, with 6 bar stools along a granite counter behind the third row.
Working within the spacious dimensions, we designed the seating layout so that all viewers could comfortably enjoy the show with unobstructed sightlines. The free-floating platform was a unique design. The room was treated with staggered stud construction. An acoustical wall absorption system was integrated into the millwork to improve the room acoustics. Video was stellar with a Sony VPH-G90U 9" CRT gun projector shooting onto a 117" Stewart Micro-perf Wide Screen, the perfect size to captivate the crowd with stunning HD video. A Lexicin MC-1 with Genelec HT210 Active Monitors for the LCR's and two HTS4 powered Subs. The side and rear surround EX speakers were Sonance Cinema II in-walls which were faux painted to match the wall

FAQ
Q. How many incoming lines do I need for a phone system?
A.
The number of incoming lines can be as limited as 1 or as large as 16 or more. When planning a phone system there are a few things to consider. First, the number of users. Will there be a home office environment that will require separate lines? Do you have children that will have their own lines? Second, a phone system can provide other features like whole-house intercom, doorbell alerts, releasing gate locks to let in visitors and security features like instantly turning on outdoor floodlights. Adding lines and extensions can be added as your priorities change.
2. How do I choose the right TV for my home entertainment system?Choosing the right TV will depend on your answer to the following questions. How large is the room? Is the room heavily illuminated with natural or ambient light?
